You may be familiar with Mount Rushmore, whether you know the history behind it or whether you have just caught a glimpse of it on a cartoon, it is arguably one of the biggest and most well known statues in the world.
Mount Rushmore National Memorial was carved into the Black Hills in Keystone, South Dakota. It features the heads of four prolific U.S. presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.
What you may not be aware of however, is the secret room which lies behind those giant carvings. Here is everything you need to know about the hidden lair..
Behind The Scenes
The carvings were initially commissioned to help bring tourism to the Black Hills region of South Dakota and work commenced in 1927. The intricate work took 14 years to complete, ending in 1941.
The area was originally home to the Lakota Sioux, which was a Native American tribe. The mountain was part of the route which the tribe’s leader took on a spiritual journey. The tribe was completely against the idea of the construction, as they felt it disrupted and interfered with their natural land.
